Vintage of the Week: Rolex GMT-Master 16753

The vintage Rolex GMT Master 16753 is a special two-toned variant of the Rolex GMT Master 16750. Ref 16753 offers a mix of stainless steel and yellow gold. However, the watch’s dial and bezel are what really draws the eye. The dark brown dial, which is even more valuable if it is faded, is topped with gold nipple hour markers. Like other GMT Master models, ref 16753 features a date window at the 3 o’clock mark.

The watch’s rotatable bezel also draws the eye, continuing the vintage two-toned look of the watch with stainless steel and yellow gold as well as a monochrome brown and cream insert. Because of its unique look, ref 16753 has been fondly nicknamed the “Root Beer Rolex” and the “eye of the tiger” due to its dial’s resemblance to the semi-precious stone with the same name, but the watch itself is very luxurious.

This GMT-Master 16753 is called a Root Beer.

While on the exterior references 16753 and 16750 look different, on the inside they are the same. The watch is water proof, thanks to its Oyster case, up to 100 m or 330 ft. Ref 16753 is powered by the caliber 3075 movement. Ref 16750 introduced the quick set feature which ref 16753 also incorporates.

The watch is finished off with an acrylic crystal and a Jubilee bracelet 62523 or an Oyster bracelet 78363. The metal bracelet continues the watch’s two-toned look, being made of stainless steel with an 18k yellow gold band down the middle.
