Between a number of high-profile new releases and some truly mind-boggling auction results, 2021 was a fairly noteworthy year within the world of luxury watches. It wouldn’t be the end of the year without a proper celebration and wrap-up, so below we take a closer look at the top Bob’s Watches trends and luxury watch moments of 2021.

Top Watch Sold
Given that we are the world’s leading online source for pre-owned Rolex watches and that stainless steel Rolex models are virtually unattainable at a retail level, it comes as no surprise that a steel Rolex claimed the top spot for our best-selling watch of 2021. Overall, it was the stainless steel Rolex Submariner 116610 that was the top watch sold, with the classic all-black version (ref. 116610LN) significantly outnumbering its green “Hulk” sibling (ref. 116610LV).
Top Dial Color
Given that our best-selling watch of the year was the Submariner 116610LN and the new 36mm Rolex Explorer also came out this year, it only makes sense that black was our top dial color for 2021. Classic, timeless, and the go-to color for Rolex’s legendary sports watches, black is consistently among the most popular dial color options each year. With that in mind, blue came in as a close second for best-selling dial color of the year, and given the universally-celebrated versatility of this classic dial color option, we are not at all surprised.
Top Metal
Due to its practicality and accessible price point, stainless steel is a favorite metal option among many watch collectors, and the popularity of steel watches was as strong as ever throughout the entirety of this past year. Although stainless steel claimed the top metal spot for 2021, two-tone steel and gold surprisingly came in at a close second. Historically, sales of stainless steel watches would significantly outnumber their bi-metal counterparts, but the fact that it was close this year is proof that two-tone watches are officially trending.

When it comes to our YouTube channel, the most popular video for 2021 was the one where we tackled the topic of whether or not you should polish your watch. Always a subject for debate (and one that doesn’t really have a right or wrong answer that applies to every scenario), this video received over 67K views, 800+ likes, and there were more than 100 different people who joined the discussion and added a comment.

Featuring a beautiful pair of two-tone Lady-Datejust watches, a stainless steel Rolex Date with an engine-turned bezel, and a classic vintage Oysterdate, this particular TikTok video received nearly 150K views in less than two months on our recently-created TikTok account.

When it comes to our most popular video content on Instagram, it was a wrist-roll of the green Rolex Day-Date ref. 118138 that claimed the title of our top Instagram Reel of 2021. Crafted entirely from solid 18k yellow gold and fitted with a stunning green sunburst dial and matching green leather strap, the Day-Date 118138 is one of the most elegant executions of Rolex’s legendary dual-calendar wristwatch, and this particular Instagram Reel received more than 81K views and nearly 3,500 likes.

In terms of traditional pictures, it was surprisingly a shot of a vintage Rolex Date ref. 1503 in yellow gold that was our top Instagram post of 2021. Typically, it is pictures of Rolex’s various sports watches that receive the most likes, but this particular image of a vintage reference 1503 with a Jubilee bracelet in solid 14k yellow gold that received more than 10,000 likes. These classic Rolex models are the definition of timeless style, and if likes on Instagram are any indicator, a solid-gold vintage Rolex is as more popular than ever.

We always tell people to buy what they love, but the investment potential of Rolex watches is undeniable and it is increasingly becoming an important factor for collectors. When it comes to our top blog article of 2021, the winner with more than 8 million views was ‘The Best Rolex Watches as Investments’ and we completely understand why this was our most popular blog article of 2021. We now live in a world where many pre-owned Rolex models are selling for two to three times more than their original brand-new retail prices, and it is becoming increasingly more important for buyers to be smart about their watch purchases.
